"New SPUR+* Prepolymer and New Silquest* Adhesion Promoters for Concrete"
(recording)
SPUR+* prepolymers (proprietary silane-terminated polyurethanes from GE) are attractive to manufacturers of adhesives, sealants and coatings. This hybrid technology appeals to users because of the synergy between the silane-curing mechanism and polyurethane backbone technology. The first attribute (silane-cure) provides SPUR+-based hybrid sealants with the advantage of moisture-curability and crosslinks that are extremely stable under various environmental conditions. The second benefit (polyurethane backbone) allows immediate paintability and non-staining properties for concrete and other porous surfaces. Most importantly, the polyurethane backbone allows for tailoring properties suitable for a variety of applications. The combined properties afford these polymers primerless adhesion to a wide range of materials.
GE's presentation will briefly review recent developments in SPUR+ technology, such as mechanical properties, rheology, and adhesion to many difficult substrates used in construction, industrial and automotive applications. The presentation will demonstrate a formulation technique to create a SPUR+ prepolymer-based sealant ready for use in these and other industries.
About the Speaker
Dr. Bruce A. Waldman, GE Advanced Materials
Dr. Waldman received his B.S. degree in chemistry from Seton Hall University followed by a Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. He then joined Union Carbide Corporation and began a 30-year career in organosilicon science. Dr. Waldman spent much of his profession in a technology capacity, working with organofunctional silanes and silicones as they pertain to adhesive, sealant and coating applications.
His major research interests were in the development of silane crosslinking technology for both sealant and coating systems. Since 1999, Dr. Waldman has held global marketing and business management positions. He is currently Global Market Manager, SPUR+ Prepolymers.
